Soapbox: Town, water district merge would be disaster for mesa
In addition, Mesans do not want the HDWD to be merged with the town and in 2009 the HDWD board voted to support the coalition’s position. According to the coalition’s survey, 95 percent of the residents made it clear they want the HDWD to remain independent. Eighty-seven percent of Mesans surveyed reported the HDWD met their needs. Their position has not changed. The complete Yucca Mesa Survey may be viewed on the coalition’s website at http://www.stopyuccamesaannexation.org/Survey/SURVEY082009FINAL.pdf . Mr. Thacher’s argument that savings will be achieved by eliminating duplication is false. Would Mr. Thacher want his real estate company to merge with the competitor realtor down the street and lose his independence? Of course not. History has shown that in every community that happens, the municipalized water district funds are ravaged by the municipality. It would be a gold mine of funds and equipment for the town. Moreover, Mesans do not want to support Yucca Valley’s continuing history of dysfunctional government. The community of Yucca Mesa’s lifestyle does not fit with the town of Yucca Valley. Yucca Mesa residents enjoy a rural lifestyle, low density and alternative housing styles, slow growth, open space, large land parcels, dirt roads, beautiful dark skies to observe the Milky Way, the keeping of horses and farm animals, and most of all peace and quiet. If the town of Yucca Valley were to succeed with their “takeover” of the HDWD, another sphere of influence application would follow shortly, and another annexation attempt on Yucca Mesa by the town would be inevitable. Yucca Mesa as we know it would cease to exist.Terms of Service - hidesertstar.com
