The nightmare lives on: Alice Cooper brings his horror to Stage AE

In inducting Alice Cooper into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March, horror-rock disciple Rob Zombie noted, "He invented the rock show. Before Alice Cooper, there was no rock show."

Of course, Screamin' Jay Hawkins used to emerge from a coffin, The Who would smash instruments, and Jimi Hendrix would light his guitar on fire, but Alice Cooper gets the credit for putting it all together into a complete theatrical experience with guillotine decapitation, electric chair, boa constrictor and those creepy baby dolls.

He was able to claim, "We drove a stake through the heart of the Love Generation."

What set him apart, and ultimately got him to that induction ceremony, was that Alice Cooper -- the person, the band -- had the songs to back it up.

Alice Cooper is 63-year-old Vincent Damon Furnier, who was born in the garage-rock haven of Detroit before, inspired by the British Invasion, starting his musical life in Phoenix and Los Angeles. The band's hard-rock sound and flair for theater drew the attention of Frank Zappa, who released the 1969 debut album, "Pretties for You," on his fledgling label, Straight Records.

Finding LA audiences unreceptive, Alice and the band moved back to Detroit, home of the MC5 and the Stooges, and with young producer Bob Ezrin at the helm, the band broke out with its third album, 1971's "Love It to Death," highlighted by rebel yell, "I'm Eighteen."

It began a successful '70s run with classic albums such as "Killer" and "Billion Dollar Babies," stocked with such hits as "School's Out," "Elected," "No More Nice Guy" and "Only Women Bleed."

Like so many '70s artists, Cooper wasn't able to sustain that level of success -- at one point, alcohol got the best of him -- but he's continued to be prolific. In September, the current Alice Cooper band will release its 25th studio record, "Welcome 2 My Nightmare," a sequel to the 1975 concept album.

Cooper has kept busy outside of the band with his syndicated radio show, "Nights of Alice Cooper," and lots of time perfecting his golf game.
