Hapless Golden Gophers present opportunity for Michigan State defense to ...
To support Minnesota football in 2011, you need to eternal optimist. Otherwise, it hasn't been a very pleasant couple of months.
The Gophers, to any man/woman/child, are a lackluster footballl team. In terms of total yardage gained on the season, Minnesota ranks 114th (of 120) in the nation. Their defense isn't much better, allowing opponents 34 points per game (104th).
Aside from the Gophers' emotional 22-21 win over rival Iowa last weekend, bright spots have been few and far between; chief emphasis belongs on "few."
The question isn't so much "Will Michigan State defeat Minnesota on Saturday?" but rather "How soundly will Michigan State beat Minnesota on Saturday?" The Spartans are favored by 28 points, after all, which scuffs off most of the sheen on the unpredictability of this game.
So if we can agree that a Michigan State win this weekend is somewhat of a foregone conclusion, then what should the Spartans be mindful of on Saturday? Simple: The opportunity to pad some already-impressive defensive statistics. To the examples!
1.) Hold Minnesota to 150 total yards of offense.
When Michigan trounced the Gophers 58-0, the Wolverines' defensive unit held Minnesota to 177 yards of offense. If Michigan State holds the Gophers to 150 yards, the Spartans' defense would -- through nine games -- be allowing opponents 220 yards of offense. That's per game.
To give some context on how ludicrous that number is, it would be the Spartans' seventh-best season average in school history. The most recent of those seasons wherein the Spartans allowed opponents fewer than 220 yards per game is 1966. (Casio wristwatch calculator says that's the best team defense in East Lansing in 45 years.)
Only 11 schools averaged less than 300 yards per game last season, and no school averaged below 265 yards. Of course, 220 yards is a relatively arbitrary benchmark, but it's presented because it's not entirely outside of the realm of possible outcomes. And, well, also because Michigan State hasn't set a top-10 team record in any major defensive category since 1999.
