Jacques Renault's Top Five Spots in Williamsburg

Voted "New York's Best DJ" by Paper Magazine and endorsed by fellow crate diggers A-Trak, Aeroplane and Tim Sweeney, it's obvious Jacques Renault possesses impeccable taste. It's part of his job description. Assuming that taste extends beyond just bass and BPMs, we asked the DFA-approved Washington native to pen a quick guide to the neighbourhood he now calls home, Williamsburg, New York.

Jacques Renault plays Future Classic's consistently excellent Adult Disco tomorrow.

Marlow & Sons, 81 Broadway, Brooklyn: My neighborhood coffee shop and favorite lunch spot. I end up spending a lot of time at either one of these places. Coffee from Portland, treats made daily, and a menu that is full of specials. I like going and not knowing what will be on the menu. I don't think I've ever been disappointed.

N8th Park - A few years ago I was kicked out of my waterfront loft as the entire building was going to be renovated and turned into condo living. Initially I was irritated that the neighborhood was changing and a lot of questionable things were happening. But there are a few things you can't complain about, particularly the newly scenic N8th city park right on the water. Years ago you had to jump the fence to get on the rocks and shoot golf balls into the east river. Now there's more supervision but some nice grass to sink your toes in. It's a nice alternative to McCarren Park, which I personally avoid as much as possible.

The Commodore, 366 Metropolitan Avenue (Havemeyer Street), Brooklyn: One of my favorite drinking spots, this place is one of my favorite places to hang out with friends and if you're lucky to get a table, there are fine things to order on the menu thanks to chicken master Steven Tanner. Over the years I've followed his places and sure enough he never fails, a very talented man for sure.

Academy Annex, 96 N.

U.S. News and World Report List Ranks Kauai, Maui and Hawaii Island in Top 10 of Best Adventure Vacations in the USA

HONOLULU – Americans looking for adventure on their holidays favor the Hawaiian Islands, with Kauai ranked No. 3, Maui No. 4 and Hawaii Island No. 7 in the U.S. News and World Report’s list of “16 Best Adventure Vacations in the USA” released today.

“The U.S. News and World Report’s Best Adventure Vacations ranking naming Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii Island in the top ten is a great recognition for our state,” said Mike McCartney, president and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority. “This honor is a testament to the things that make Hawaii special – our people, place and culture, and the commitment of our visitor industry in providing visitors with a unique experience that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.”

The ranking cites Kauai’s “acres of misty rainforests, plummeting waterfalls and jagged cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean;” Maui’s “plethora of heart-pounding options from sea kayaking to mule riding;” and Hawaii Island’s “black volcanic deserts, tumbling waterfalls, lush rainforests and five volcanoes.”

“The natural beauty of our islands shape the many activities our visitors participate in, from soft adventure to the more extreme,” said John Monahan, president and CEO of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau. “We’ve been working hard marketing Hawaii’s rich active adventure experiences and are pleased to see three Hawaiian Islands in the top 10. We encourage visitors to keep exploring all six unique islands – Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and Hawaii Island.”

The new rankings reflect how strongly a destination is recommended by an independent collection of published travel writers and by U.S. News Travel website users.

“Whether in the fall or any time of year, everyone is looking for a great travel experience,” said Chad Smolinski, Vice President of Rankings and Reviews at U.S. News and World Report. “Our vacation rankings help travelers find places that others would recommend in a heartbeat.
