Jones at ease in first season

With the Tide Football Camp under his belt and his first regular season game as Glencoe’s head coach looming, Steve Jones looked like he’d just come from a day spa.

Eased back in his office chair and cracking sunflower seeds on Friday afternoon, Jones described his first week with his players with a huge grin on his face.

“We’ve got a great group of kids coming up,” said Jones, who took over for Tim Duvall. “I was able to see third- through sixth-graders during the day, then see the seventh- through the 12-graders. Man, I’m impressed with not only numbers but the quality of kids, the quality of athletes coming up.”

Tide fans will see a whole new brand of football with Jones at the helm as he has implemented the Pistol offense, in which the quarterback is in shotgun formation four years behind the center.

At the Tide camp, the new offense created a buzz not only amongst the players, but the coaches as well.

“All the youth coaches are eager, they want to know what to do now,” Jones said. “For 30 years they’ve been doing ‘iso’ and ‘pitch’ and ‘blast’ and that’s been our bread and butter at Glencoe High School. Now it’s ‘stretch’ and ‘shotgun formation’ and ‘zone dive’ and all this kind of stuff. So there’s a nuance to it from what it’s been at Glencoe.”

But Jones said he had to do a little bit of convincing when it came to some of the youth coaches.

“Let’s start teaching these kids now and they’re going to find that it’s like having a new toy,” Jones said. “It’s like playing street ball.”

Normally, the first position people want to know about when it comes to the upcoming season is quarterback.

But when I thought about the transition to the Pistol, I wanted to know how Jones was doing at the center position. After all, snapping a football isn’t as easy as it looks.

First step: washing my make-up off and applying the lotion that works with the red lights in the facial. I sat down in the Cyber Relax chair and Jamie, the spa consultant, adjusted it to match my body. The foot rest moved, conforming to my feet as the leg rest was raised. The back of the chair reclined. The chair massaged all parts of my body – even my feet – and I could customize the pressure levels to

get the massage I wanted.

The massage lasted 15 minutes but it was by far the most relaxing massage I’ve ever gotten. I wasn’t uncomfortable because someone wastouching me; it was all automated. Such an easy service is perfect for someone in a hurry who just has a few minutes to spare – the benefits lasted all day and then some.

The chair stopped the massage five minutes before the facial, giving me more time to relax so I didn’t feel rushed before the next service.

When the Lumiere facial started, my face became tingly for the first few minutes. The red light was extremely bright, which Jamie had told me about ahead of time, so I wore goggles. After the facial, which lasted about 20 minutes, I used the moisturizer they had given me to lock in the results of the red light. My face was smooth and I didn’t need to wear make-up for a week because my skin looked so smooth and flawless.
