Emergency personnel are combing through a lake southwest of Edmonton, after a Jet Ski was found without a rider Saturday afternoon.
Wetaskiwin RCMP said they received a call reporting a possible missing boater just before 3 Saturday afternoon.
The caller said they had seen the man riding a personal watercraft without a life jacket, and then about 45 minutes later saw the same watercraft with no rider, going around in circles.
A massive search operation has launched to find the man, STARS Air Ambulance, Edmonton Police Service's Air Two, Pigeon Lake protective services, and firefighters and RCMP officers from Wetaskiwin, Leduc and Thorsby are involved in the search.
The man has been identified as 62-year-old Leduc resident Larry Majeski.
Crews were forced to stop for the night at about 9 Saturday, and planned to resume the search Sunday morning – by that time the effort turned from rescue to recovery, and strong winds left search crews on the shore to wait out the weather.
"[The weather] can make the recovery effort a lot more difficult because the victim does move in the water," Corporal Kevin Krebs of the Wetaskiwin RCMP said Sunday.
At least a dozen emergency workers were back in the area Sunday morning to continue the search.
Majeski had taken his personal watercraft out on the lake one last time before putting it away for the season when he disappeared.
"He is an experienced rider, at this point we're not sure what happened to him, why he fell off the Sea-Doo or [if] there was a medical issue," Krebs said. "At this point we can't determine what happened."
The community of the city Majeski and his family called home for more than 30 years is reeling from the disappearance.
The city's mayor spoke to CTV News Sunday over the phone, and is having a hard time with the news.
"It's a tremendous loss for our community," Mayor Greg Krischke. "I don't know what else to say, I'm speechless.

Canadian Philanthropist Jesse Willms Donates Money In Honor Of ...
, September 9, 2011 — Edmonton businessman Jesse Willms has donated $750 to the American Humane Association in honor of the rescue dogs who helped in the search for victims after the 9/11 attacks.
“Ten years ago terrorists shook the world with their inhumanity,” Willms said. “When that happened, man’s best friend came to our aid and helped us find our fellow man. These dogs were the unsung heroes of the day.”
Rescue dogs and seeing-eye dogs played a crucial role both during and after the attacks. One dog, Roselle, helped guide her blind master down 78 flights of World Trade Center stairs 15 minutes before the building collapsed.
Other dogs helped find victims buried in the rubble so they could be saved before they suffocated to death underground. Still others helped find the bodies of victims so that their families could have proper funerals.
“The bravery and loyalty of these animals is almost unbelievable,” Willms said. “They came to our aid when we needed them the most.”
The American Humane Association provided on-site support for the animals – including food, water and veterinary care – during the attacks themselves, during the weeks of searching afterward, and then provided follow-up care for the animals who needed it during the years after the attacks.
“There were many heroes that day,” Willms said. “All deserve to be honored. I am happy to donate to the Humane Association for the good work they did in helping these tireless animals do the dangerous jobs that were so vital on that dark day in American history.”
Dr. Robin R. Ganzert, President and CEO of the American Humane Association, said, “After 9/11 America transcended its differences and remembered its core values for protecting our most vulnerable. On 9/11 we were all vulnerable. Heroic dogs broke through rubble, grief, and language barriers to find and comfort us with their universal medicine: unconditional love.
