Student packs freshman year with service endeavors
Milad Alucozai, who is entering his sophomore year in the College of Health and Human Sciences, had won a challenge via DoSomething.org , which was the reason for the interview. The problem, though, was Alucozai did so much in his freshman year he had a difficult time pointing to just one thing.
There’s the day-to-day tasks, such as working 30 hours per week as a full-time researcher and serving as president of Purdue’s chapter of the Roosevelt Institute, which he founded. There’s the awards for the different endeavors he’s thrown himself into: Aside from the DoSomething.org challenge, he won the Dean Betty Nelson Community Service Award, took first place at the Purdue Undergraduate Research Symposium and became the youngest student at Purdue to be inducted into the Sigma Xi Honor Society.
He also traveled to Washington, D.C., where he met with Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., and took part in the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City.
Meanwhile, he kept a perfect 4.0 GPA.
So, the question, again: “What was the highlight of your freshman year?”
Finally, one day stuck out.
Dec. 29, 2010
Alucozai walked into the office of a hospital director in Nepal. The director, an ex-military officer wearing a leather jacket and a fistful of shiny rings, and Alucozai had seemingly competing goals for the meeting.
Alucozai was in Nepal, a trip he made during his winter break, to assess and find ways to assist the health care system in the South Asian country. He hoped to persuade the director to set up a free health clinic to help those who couldn’t afford care.
The director, who knew Alucozai had been to several other hospitals, wanted only to find out how he compared to his competitors. In the midst of talks, Alucozai saw an opportunity for both men to get what they wanted.
“I said to him, ‘You know what would be a really good way to stand out among all these hospitals? Get the actual people to like your hospital, to talk about it, to get it out,’” he said. “I said, ‘You set up a free health clinic – it’s a win-win for everybody.
