CHARLESTON, S.C. — Plans are moving forward for a $142 million makeover of a Charleston auditorium to create a world class performing arts center.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported ( http://bit.ly/owipXi ) that the city's Board of Architectural Review has approved preliminary design plans for the renovation of the city's Gaillard Municipal Auditorium.

The building will be used as a major venue for the internationally known Spoleto Festival. Plans call for reducing the size of the auditorium from 2,700 seats to 1,800.

The schedule calls for work to begin next year with the building to be finished in 2014.

Tigers still in hunt for defensive lineman | The Post and Courier ...

One of the nation's top uncommitted football prospects announced a final-seven list last week, and Clemson made the list.

Defensive lineman Eddie Goldman of Washington, D.C., had been sitting on a list of 15, including Clemson and South Carolina. The reduced list consists of the Tigers, Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, California, Maryland and Miami. Of course, the situation at Miami puts the Hurricanes in a tenuous position. Goldman is now deciding on his five official visits. One of his early ones is expected to be Florida State next month for the Oklahoma game.

Another highly regarded defensive lineman, John Atkins of Thomson, Ga., plans to announce his decision on Sept. 2. He is down to Clemson, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Georgia Tech. He said he knows where he plans to commit.

In other recruiting news:

Defensive back Chaz Elder of College Park, Ga., will announce his decision Friday, with USC expected to get the nod over Georgia and Vanderbilt. He plans to post his decision on his Facebook and Twitter pages.

WR Chris Brown of Hanahan wants to play football and run track in college. And right now USC is where he's planning to apply his talents. "It's highly probable he will be going to USC but my mission is to show him other places before he signs," his father, Joe Brown, said. "Steve Spurrier Jr. has been communicating with him pretty hard. I got a feeling it's going to be around the end of the football season (before he commits)." Joe Brown said his son is going to visit Virginia Tech unofficially in a couple of weeks, and he is planning to take official visits to Cincinnati and LSU. He's also talking with Notre Dame about an official visit. The elder Brown said USC wants his son first as a wide receiver, though he could end up playing cornerback there. He's also a nationally ranked triple jumper.

ATH Marty Williams of Fox Creek now calls Florida his favorite. Williams, who had one time appeared set to commit to Clemson, said Florida, Clemson and Miami are his top three, in that order. He plans to take official visits to each. Williams wants to play quarterback in college and the Gators worked him at that position at their camp last month. Clemson has recruited him as a free safety.
