Fiasco – An In-Depth RPG Review
Is an RPG designed for 3-5 players (with larger groups the author recommends splitting into multiple groups to keep things moving fast). A typical game lasts 2-3 hours, though I have found it usually takes closer to four the first couple times you play. It is a GM-less, no preparation game, making it ideal for a game ideal for conventions, one-offs, and short notice cancellations from players. The game is authored by Jason Morningstar and published by Bully Pulpit Games .In an attempt to explain and illustrate how the game works, I’ve included references to a recent session I took part in using The Jersey Side playset. You’ll see these in blue, italicized text throughout the review.
The Book
Fiasco is a 132-page digest (6″x9″) perfect bound soft-cover book that retails for $25 (a PDF-version is also available for $12). The book has a color cover, with a black & white interior. The art, while simplistic, is attractive and fits the game perfectly. The book is well-written, although somewhat idiosyncratic in that it is written in a conversational manner that includes liberal use of profanity. While this may turn off some readers, it fits the mood and tone of the game well and is done in a way that isn’t overly gratuitous. The book also includes an extensive example of actual play which is a huge benefit in understanding how the game works at the table. is essentially about creating “caper” movies, starting with the introduction of the characters, the unfolding of the plot and finishing with the final scene in which it is likely that most, if not all, the characters, are dead, dying, scarred for life, or in jail. Of course, there is always a possibility that one or more may also see fortune smile upon them, though where’s the fun in that?
The structure and nature of the particular story is determined by the playset which is made up of a series of tables that are used to generate the key story elements — relationships, locations, objects, and needs. The book comes with four playsets (a southern town, suburbia, a town in the Wild West, and an Antarctic station), but an ever growing number of playsets have also been released to date, spanning a wide variety of sub-genres and topics.

There is a fantastic magic system in there and it uses the basic Call of Cthulhu rules which have been modified for the game. Rather than using the magic points, you cobble together technology to give you a power level of spell you can cast.
Off the top of my head I could easily retool this for a 2nd or 3rd edition Ravenloft, Chill, Call of Cthulhu or Castles and Crusades campaign. This is a fun little package in all respects and well worth picking up. So there we go.

Overall, I'm very happy with Street Legends but Shadowrun also has a special place in my heart along with Call of Cthulhu and the old TSR Marvel Super Heroes games as my favorite systems/settings combinations. Street Legends isn't something a Shadowrun

When I created the Cthulhu Reborn blog a few months ago, my intention was to use it as a place to publish high-quality PDF versions of classic Call of Cthulhu scenarios that have been knocking around for years as free (text-only) downloads. Since then, I have put out exactly one PDF ... written by myself. Which, frankly makes the blog look a bit like a vanity press (which wasn't the original intent). Anyway, today I am rectifying this situation with the release of a PDF layout I have been working on for a week or so ... for a Dreamlands scenario written in 1992 by Penelope Love (and published in the Chaosium Digest in November 1994). It's called "Porphyry and Asphodel". Penny wrote lots of really nice scenarios back in the early days of Chaosium's line of Call of Cthulhu books -- Terror Australis, Fatal Experiments, Orient Express, Sacraments of Evil, etc, etc. I'm not sure why this particular scenario was never published in a Chaosium book (it looks as though it was edited in a form anticipating such a release) ... maybe it was supposed to be part of the Third Edition of Dreamlands (also published in 1992), or maybe it was intended for a book of Dreamlands scenarios that never eventuated post the release of the Third Edition. The scenario itself is a classic Dream-quest, which also involves a couple of key elements from Lovecraft's Randolph Carter cycle ... to say anything more would give away some of the mystery of the plot. I can say that it involves lots of cats and lots and LOTS of Zoogs. It reads like it would be a joy to run for a Dreamlands-oriented group of players ... In generated a (hopefully attractive) typeset PDF for Penelope's scenario I have made virtually no changes to the text ... although I have filled in one missing piece from the original Chaosium Digest publication by drawing a map for the unusual "Castle of Sleep" that plays a central role in the story (but for which a map was not previously provided). ...
