Pride of West Virginia to Perform at New Mingo Central HS
The first football game at the brand new Mingo Central High School was probably going to be special no matter what.
But the inaugural game will have some special guests and events Friday.
Before the Miners take the field against Wyoming East, the the band the West Virginia University Marching Band will take the field to perform.
It's not a common trip for the Pride of West Virginia, according to band director Jay Drury.
"The band has never been to Mingo County, at least not that we can recall in the modern era," Drury said. "We're really looking forward to heading down that direction."
The new high school consists of the former Gilbert, Matewan, Williamson and Burch high schools.
Drury said he and band members are happy to get out and see the Mountain State. He said he doesn't want the music to be heard only in Morgantown.
"The band really belongs to the state," Drury said. "This is a great opportunity for us."
In recent years, the band has raised money through the WVU Foundation Pride Travel Fund to help pay for trips to Auburn, LSU, Connecticut and Syracuse, Drury said. That money also helps pay for trips to areas around the state.
Drury said he's excited that a donor is making the trip possible to Mingo County.
"They've got a great thing happening down there with the new school and everything," Drury said. "We're happy to be a part of it."
The band will play prior to kickoff before heading back to Morgantown.
The school's new band will perform at halftime.
