Okanagan faces highest wildfire risk of the season
With two solid weeks of sunshine and hot temperatures, fire fuels like needles and other debris have dried out.
That means the risk of wildfires is High to Extreme in most areas of the Valley.
"Right now, essentially everything south of the Kamloops Fire Centre, aside from a few isolated pockets is in a High danger rating," says Fire Centre Information Officer Kevin Skrepnek, "we also have the area around Merritt and Lytton in Extreme fire danger."
The Kamloops Fire Centre is confident they're prepared for any potential flare-ups.
"Currently, there are 72 personnel from the Kamloops Fire Centre in Ontario, but they are kept on a 24-hour stand-by where we can recall them," says Skrepnek.
He adds there are still over 220 firefighters in BC that can be dispached at a drop of a hat, and other fire crews are on their way back from fighting blazes out east.
Meanwhile, fire bans are in affect across the Okanagan to make sure campfires don't get out of hand.
Fires over a half-metre squared are not allowed.
Authorities are keeping a close eye on conditions across the Southern Interior.
The hot, dry weather is expected to continue through the end of next week.
