Conundrum corner: Arrowhead area businesses consider futures
The flood of 2011 eviscerated a large portion of the city of Minot, leaving many to wonder what the city will look like in the future. The busy business corner at Second Avenue and 16th Street Southwest, which was wiped out by the flooding Souris River, is already undergoing some changes.
The Burger King restaurant building is for sale. Across the street to the east, Harley's Arrowhead Conoco is rebuilding. The First International Bank branch has been torn down. Northwest Projector, West Oaks Animal Hospital and Kelly Chiropractic have moved to temporary locations. Bruns Drywall is cleaned up and back in business.
"We are attempting to sell the building," said John Hummel, Arrowhead Burger King. "That decision has been made. At some point we'd like to see a third location in Minot."
Harley's Arrowhead Conoco remained tucked inside a very high protective dike during the flood. However, water entered the Food Shop portion of the business by surging through blocked floor drains in the adjacent car wash. The service bays were flooded too but should be back in business no later than next Monday.
The main gasoline and Food Shop suffered enough water damage to warrant a complete renovation of the interior. Although an exact date for re-opening is not certain, work is under way and it is hoped the new look can be unveiled sometime in mid-September.
Northwest Projector and West Oaks Animal Hospital share a nearby building on Second Avenue. A huge pile of debris that used to make up the interior of the building remained piled along the curb Monday.
"We had about 8 1/2 feet of water. It's pretty-well gutted now and we do plan to go back in there," said Jim Keller, Northwest Projector. "You have to think, is it worth it or not? We lost a lot of parts and that kind of thing and are getting concerned about freezing temperatures. We're hoping to be back before the end of the year."
In the meantime, Northwest Projector continues to do business out of son Lee Keller's residence in Trestle Valley.

Police: Chiropractor found with 75 marijuana plants - WHTM abc27
An Adams County chiropractor had marijuana plants growing in the basement of a building that serves as his home and office, police said.
Police said 75 plants were found Tuesday in the practice of Dr. John Soliday, located at 409 East King Street in Littlestown. Cash and a firearm were also retrieved there.
Soliday was arraigned on drug-related charges and released on $25,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is set for next week.
