You would think it was a given. Ask Ken Griffey Jr.’s son who his favorite athlete is and you would have to figure Trey Griffey would put down his father. So it’s an obvious choice, right? After all, his dad is known as one of the best power-hitters (fifth on the all-time home run list with 630) and defensive players to ever play in the Major Leagues.
But to Trey Griffey, the wide receiver at Dr. Phillips, Ken Griffey Jr. isn’t the great baseball player who everyone else sees. He isn’t the player who retired last year after more than 20 years in the Majors. To Trey Griffey, Ken Griffey Jr., is just dad.
“I didn’t put him down because that’s just my father,” Trey Griffey said about his response to the question about who his favorite athlete was on the questionnaire he filled out during Saturday’s third annual Sentinel Varsity Football Media Day. “I put down Calvin Johnson because he plays the position that I play.”
Ken Griffey Jr. is a regular at the sidelines watching Dr. Phillips’ football practices and games, Trey said. Even though he was a pro baseball player, Trey said his dad knows plenty about football, too.
Trey, who played at West Orange before transferring to Dr. Phillips, is No. 25 on the Sentinel’s 2012 Central Florida Super60 list of recruits.
