Oftentimes, it's small children who unintentionally swallow pool water who are affected. "Some are being affected by allergies during the summer months, but most seem to have known triggers such as grass, dust or pets," says Schwilk. "Avoidance is first line in symptom reduction, but for those age two or over, allergy medicines may be needed."

Symptoms include fever, sores in the mouth, a poor appetite, and a rash with blisters over the palms of hands and soles of feet. Most children recover in about ten days without much medical treatment. "Infection risk can be reduced by practicing good hygiene, such as frequent hand washing, thoroughly cleaning objects and surfaces that may be contaminated with the virus and avoiding close contact with people that are infected.
