Halo – Combat Evolved Anniversary: Two maps showed off at Gamescom
Gamescom never fails to deliver the goods. As one of the larger annual European video games conventions, it is a great event for video game companies the world over to hawk their goods, boast about stuff in the pipeline, and overall flex their marketing muscle. And what better way to generate buzz than lots of video trailers and demos, right?
There’s no shortage of either in this year’s Gamescom as exemplified by Microsoft’s marketing of its heavily promoted Halo – Combat Evolved Anniversary (which itself is a lead in for the much anticipated Halo 4). Microsoft treated attendees to two awesome maps, Beaver Creek and Damnation. According to Game Informer writer Jeff Cork: “The game will ship with updated versions of the original maps, running on the Halo: Reach engine. Reach players can download these maps, and there will be full compatibility between multiplayer on those two games. That also means that players will be able to use enhancements like jetpacks in those original maps, which really adds an extra dimension to the gameplay that fans are familiar with. For instance, that little sniper spot on Beaver Creek isn’t quite as desirable now that players can simply rocket up to it.
The game’s classic mode isn’t supported in multiplayer, but we’ll have a chance to check it out this week.” The ability to switch back between old and new graphics does sound quite intriguing. However, besides the nostalgia value, we suspect the old graphics version of Halo – Combat Evolved Anniversary will wear out quickly and most people would prefer the newer graphics.
