Morning Rounds: Pill Mill Docs Are Still 'Clear, Active' On DOH ...
By Kimberly Vlach -
In Friday’s rounds, 12 of the 13 docs involved in this week’s South Florida pill mill-ring bust still have “clear, active” licenses on the Department of Health list; a study finds vaccines are safe and dangers are rare; are farm subsidies making American’s fat?; and speaking of the country’s waistline, the obesity rate is projected to soar.
Most of the doctors involved in recent pill mill-ring bust still have ‘clear, active’ licenses on DOH list : “This revives a question that consumer groups have frequently asked regarding Florida’s medical discipline laws and processes: Why do so many doctors escape authorities’ attention for so long? The current Surgeon General, Frank Farmer, has sped up the emergency-suspension process for physicians who are dangers to the public since he took office in April. But the clear records of most of the indicted doctors suggests he has a long way to go.” (Health News Florida)
Study finds vaccines are safe and dangers are rare : “The independent panel considered adverse effects from eight common childhood vaccines, and found that in many cases there wasn’t enough evidence to if say there was a problem. But the committee came out loud and clear on the controversial question which drove the report. Do vaccines — such as the one against measles, mumps and rubella — cause autism? Nope.” (NPR)
Are farm subsidies making Americans fat? : “The U.S. Department of Agriculture distributes $10 billion to $30 billion a year in subsidies to farmers. More than 90 percent of those subsidies go to growers of five crops: corn, wheat, rice, soybeans and cotton. Less than 1 percent goes to fruits and vegetables — precisely the foods the federal government says we need to eat more. Corn, which reaps nearly 40 percent of the subsidies, and wheat are the most heavily subsidized. They are also staples in a variety of common, fattening, nutrition-deficient foods.
