Kate Cole wants an invite to your closet

Her Steve Madden stilettos clicked on the floor as she quickly surveyed the vintage shop for one-of-a-kind finds.

Her eyes narrowed at a row of hats. Score.

“I love this ... it is to die for,” exclaimed Kate Klepper Cole, mentally pairing the pillbox-style hat with netting and feather details with a ladylike dress from another shop, as she added it to the overflowing pile of dresses, belts and jewelry for a fall fashion photo shoot.

For the past few years, Cole, 31, has helped friends create unexpected looks.

“It sort of comes naturally for me,” she said. “I’ll put things they never would have thought of together.”

It was only after having her son Wynn, now 9 months, with husband Carl, that she decided to take her passion to the next level by launching Kate Cole Style & Wardrobe Consulting.

“It kind of hit me one day. Styling — that’s what I love to do. More than designing and selling clothes, I love putting clothes together for people,” she said. “So I wanted to pursue it as a business.”

The Decatur High graduate’s background prepared her for this decision. Her degree in apparel merchandising, design and production management from Auburn University propelled her to work at Macy’s in Memphis and later at Carriage House in Decatur.

Her passion for fashion started long before that, however.

“In elementary school, when all my friends were playing hopscotch, I was flipping through back issues of my mom’s Vogues,” she said. “I also gathered fashion inspiration from MTV and Madonna, of course.”

She credits her mom with allowing her to experiment edgy style at an early age.

“My mom let me dress in black all my third grade year,” she said.

Now Cole helps others discover their personal style.

“My biggest thing, that I sort of pride myself on, is I never push my own personal style on my clients. I help them develop, discover and hone in on their personal style that they’re comfortable and confident in,” she said.
