Alle-Kiski Valley forum spotlights spending, economics
-->Balancing budgets, promoting economic development and improving education were the hot topics at a bipartisan legislative forum hosted by Penn State New Kensington on Thursday evening.
State Rep. Eli Evankovich, R-Murrysville, said he organized the meeting of regional state and federal legislators to give local constituents an opportunity to discuss important issues with their representatives.
"We sit on different sides of the aisle in Washington, D.C., or Harrisburg, but we are very much here to represent the members of our communities," Evankovich told the crowd at PSNK's Forum Theatre.
Evankovich added the ideas brought forth by citizens also could be "the genesis for new legislation and policies."
Evankovich was joined by state Sens. Jim Brewster, D-McKeesport, and Kim Ward, R-Hempfield, as well as U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, D-McCandless. New Kensington Mayor Tom Guzzo moderated the question-and-answer session.
Of the 10 pre-selected questions asked by the audience, two-thirds dealt directly with the budget or economic development. And several other topics, such as education and health care, also boiled down to funding or promoting the economy.
Despite their varying political philosophies, many times the legislators agreed on problems and solutions.
Balancing budgets
Marcella Sarson of Delmont asked what large budget items the lawmakers would cut.
Brewster and Evankovich agreed the state Department of Public Welfare could be reduced -- Evankovich said the department should be scrutinized to eliminate fraud and abuse.
Brewster also wants to cut the Department of Corrections. Evankovich said he had review duplication of services and inefficient regulations.
Instead of cutting major programs, Altmire said he would be more inclined to look at small objects that collectively add up --- as a transportation program to study now complete billboards abroad Several engines manufactured for fighter aircraft and to duplicate the training programs sponsored by several organizations.

Child Care: How To Handle Parent-Child Separation Anxiety
You know it has to be done and yet you feel miserable and sometimes guilty about leaving your baby in Child Care . You probably find yourself crying all the way to work especially when he cries every time you leave. Your child feels the stress you feel at separation and, interestingly, the caregiver too feels a certain amount of stress. We’ll discuss here the ways in which you can manage the stress and help your little one adapt to the new routine.
There could be several reasons why your child and you find it difficult to cope with the separation. The most common fear is of being abandoned. He can also sense your anxiety while you drop him off. In some cases, the Day Care Centre may not be able to provide an appropriate activity program attuned to his temperament and interests. Also, he may not like the food provided there, or the sheer number of children and teachers may be a bit too much for him to handle. There is of course the more serious possibility of child abuse which is hard to find out as he may not confide in you. But, if you feel that he’s unnaturally fearful of being left at the Centre, or cries more than usual, you shouldn’t rule out abuse.
This is often very important section of this theme. It usually takes a child about a month to adjust to his new situation. So, do not be alarmed if your kid persists in crying as he’ll soon adapt once he realizes that you’ll be back to pick him up. Some children who do not cry at the start may even start crying after a week, a month, or even a year! Remember it’s a natural reaction to change and the inability to control circumstances.
This blog is amazing and certain things can be used for early childhood education but like the title says it is for elementary level. I definitely recommend this if you need to integrate social studies in your lesson plans because it gives you so much information necessary in doing it the correct way in compliance to state requirements within a school curriculum.
