Sommer 1999. Die Chiffre für Coolness heißt Flash. Wer eine der 5000 Karten für die gleichnamige Hip-Hop-Jam im Stadtpark besitzt, gehört zu denen, die wissen, was abgeht, sind sie doch die Gradmesser für Style. Absolute Beginner und Fettes Brot, Dynamite Deluxe und Eins, Zwo sind die neuen Helden der Stadt.
Hip-Hop steht für ein neues Lebensgefühl, und Hamburg ist genauso cool wie seine Reimekünstler. "Nordisch By Nature" ist die Hymne dieser Generation, T-Shirts vom Eimsbush-Label und der Mongoklikke sind der Renner. Platten werden als Vinylscheiben gekauft und wie Schätze behandelt. Doch die Hip-Hop-Seligkeit vergeht genauso schnell wie der "Summer Of Love", den die Hippies 1967 in Kalifornien feierten.
Im Jahr der Jahrtausendwende wird das Flash-Festival ins Millerntorstadion verlegt. Was im Untergrund angefangen hat und Musik für eingeweihte Cliquen ist, wird mit Rasanz zum Massenphänomen. Hip-Hop ist plötzlich zum lukrativen Geschäft geworden. Kleine Labels wie Yo Mama werden von den großen Entertainment-Riesen aufgekauft, in den Augen der A&R-Manager rotierten die Euro so schnell wie in Daddelautomaten. Wer ein Mikro halten kann und ein paar Minimalreime schafft, bekommt unter Garantie einen Plattenvertrag. "Hey, Leude, wohin wollt ihr hin mit dem Mikro in der Hand?", fragte Beginner-Rapper Jan Eißfeldt alias Jan Delay damals.
Schon bald ist es vorbei mit den intelligenten Texten, witzigen Anspielungen und verschachtelten Wortspielen. Plötzlich ist Berlin am Start. Mit Hip-Hoppern, die auf gewaltig dicke Hose machen und doch nur Gangsta-Rapper aus den USA imitieren. Plötzlich ist alles Ghetto und "Bling Bling"-Goldkette, sexistische und gewalttätige Texte sind die neuen Vehikel, um Platten zu verkaufen.
