DTE Energy granted $485M renewable energy contract
DTE Energy granted $485M renewable energy contract Melissa Burden/ The Detroit NewsDTE Energy's $485 million renewable energy contract to buy 120 megawatts generated from Tuscola Bay Wind LLC was granted Thursday by the Michigan Public Service Commission.
The approval puts the Detroit utility more than halfway toward its goal of 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy, or 10 percent of its power that is required by the state by 2015.
DTE will buy the energy — enough to power 30,000 homes — from a 9,000-acre wind farm that reaches in Tuscola , Bay and Saginaw counties, according to a news release. The farm is expected to be operational late in 2012.
The farm will be owned by NextEra Energy Resources and construction, expected to begin next year, would require a work force of 250 to 275 people and will generate 10 to 12 permanent employees, DTE Energy said.
DTE Energy also plans to file contracts with the commission for Southfield-based Barton Malow Co. to build three DTE Energy wind farms in Huron and Sanilac counties next year. It also has selected General Electric Co. to provide nearly 70 wind turbines to go on those farms, totaling about 110 megawatts.
That project is expected to require 110 to 120 construction workers for six to nine months and will require 10 to 12 full-time jobs to maintain the turbines, DTE Energy said.
The commission Thursday also approved a one-time credit worth $7 million for Detroit Edison's electric customers, stemming from a settlement reached on its 2010 collection for uncollectible bills. A residential customer using 500 kilowatt hours of electricity a month will see a one-time credit of $1.24 in their September bills, according to the commission.
An alternative gas supplier were also granted a license by the Commission today, according to a news release.
Xoom Michigan Energy LLC, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, received the license because it can help develop a competitive, the commission said. It plans to establish an office in Sterling Heights.
