The quest for eternal life, part II

This week, in the second half of a Collected Wisdom two-part special, we offer a very different viewpoint as we continue our examination of whether you can beat the Grim Reaper.

THE QUESTION

As avid CW readers (is there any other kind?) will recall, this deep discussion was prompted by a question from Paul Noble of St. John's, who asked, “Is it inevitable that all living things will die?”

THE ANSWERS

Last week, Patrick J.J. Phillips , a lecturer in the department of philosophy at York University in Toronto, argued that the answer could be no. He pointed out that, according to some philosophical schools of thought, just because something has always happened in the past doesn't mean it will always happen in the future. Therefore, there is no necessary connection between life and eventual death.

This week, we get a very different take on this question from Michael Sherar , a lecturer at the University of Regina.

“I'm no philosopher,” he writes, “so we'll talk about dying from a strictly biological perspective, and define life as having an active metabolism and death as the absence of life.” From this viewpoint, he says, death is, unfortunately, inevitable – even if you could eliminate aging.

“Humans, like many organisms, experience senescence or biological changes that progress with age after reaching maturity.” The older you get, the more likely it is that you'll die. “What causes aging is not well agreed upon, particularly since senescence isn't universal,” he writes, and there are many organisms that appear to never “age.” Lobsters, for instance, don't seem to show any signs of it.

“There are countless theories on the hows and whys of aging, such as waste accumulation interfering with metabolic processes,” or simple “wear and tear.” Then there's the evolutionary theory that an organism possesses only sufficient maintenance and repair mechanisms so that it can live long enough to reproduce. After that, there is no biological advantage in having better “maintenance/repair” functions and thus a longer lifespan.

The only ones I can think of who are still alive are Tess the Reaper, Meg, and Sheriff Mills. Is asking for a kickass female hunter who isn't incredibly annoying too much to ask? Ok, I could go on, but everyone would be bored to tears.

'Reaper' Canceled: The CW Decides It Wants To Be Just Like Fox ...

, The great show on the CW network, has officially been canceled. The show mixed fiction and lightly-handled religious elements with loads of great humor. It starred Brett Harrison , who becomes a bounty hunter for the Devil, bound for eternity to find and re-capture souls who have escaped from the fires of Hell. Harrison (who played Sam) was joined by his two friends, Sock ( Tyler Labine ) and Ben ( Rick Gonzalez ), and his female interest Andi ( Missy Peregrym ), who all work together at a home improvement superstore as their day jobs. The Devil (played brilliantly by Ray Wise ), was one of the best TV characters today.

The second worst thing in all of this is that the show still had so many great storylines going for it, and with only the Season 2 finale left, I’m not sure they will be able to cover all of the bases and wrap it up as well as one could hope for.

Oh, we have been annoying for awhile now. ;D I’m just happy people are helping us out.

Any Reaper fans? Although the CW is not picking up Reaper, we not giving up yet. Hollywood Reporter is STILL saying ABC Studios is still trying to move the show into syndication or cable. We’re advocating all Reaper fans to write their CW affiliates. All links and info here: http://community.livejournal.com/reaperdmv/442 08.html And don’t forget to contact ABC Studios and thank them for not giving up on Reaper.
