OUTSIDE ROUNDUP: SC's Vanderstoep, US team finish third on first day of worlds

Santa Cruz resident and Kirby student Jordan Vanderstoep combined with American teammates for third in their heat on their first day of competition at the Junior Rowing World Championships at Eton Dorney Lake in England.

The US junior men's coxed four team sped through 2,000 meters in 7 minutes, 3.61 seconds to land behind heat winner New Zealand [6:46.6] and second-place Germany [6:49.8]. Vanderstoep's teammates for the event were Samuel Helms, Matthew Milner, Stuart Maeder and Sean Dougherty.

The top two teams from their heat, which also saw France in last place [7:07:37], advanced to the "A" final.

The US and France moves on to a repechage, a last-chance qualifying heat for the "A" final. The results were unavailable by press time.

SURFING

Hawaii's John John Florence and France's Jeremy Flores eliminated Santa Cruz's Nat Young from the ASP Prime U.S. Open of Surfing in the Round of 48 at the Huntington Beach Pier on Thursday.

Young surfed to a 11.97 score, a combined total of his best two waves judged on a 10-point scale. With only the top two surfers from their four-man heat advancing, though, Florence's 14 and Flores' 12.57 proved too much to overcome. American Nathan Yeomans [9.57] was also ousted. Young was earlier this week also eliminated from the junior division.

BMX

After winning gold in their Challenge Class events at the UCI BMX World Championships in Copenhagen last week, Watsonville's Ryan Pettigrew and Michael "Bubba" Gonzales competed in the Cruiser Class -- where the bikes have 24-inch wheels -- on Sunday, the final day of the event.

Fueled by eating pasta every night for almost a week, Pettigrew placed second in the 13- and 14-year-olds division behind USA teammate Collin Hudson, of Longmont, Colo., and Gonzales crashed early, failing to make the 11-12s final.

As one of only three 13-year-olds in the race, Pettigrew started in third, made a move on an Aruba team racer on the second turn and pedaled hard to catch up.
