Demands of work put end to Mogg

SUNSHINE Coast Sea Eagles mentor Adam Mogg revealed yesterday that he would not re-apply for the head coach’s role at the club next season.

“I just feel like I’ve got an awful lot on my plate at the moment and I just can’t commit the time that they’re looking for next year,” the 34-year-old said after the Sea Eagles lost 24-14 to Norths in a hard-fought encounter at Bokarina.

The former Queensland State of Origin winger is a commercial agent at a real estate business and is “working on some developments in mining towns”.

“I’m trying to coach as well, so from a retired footballer that has gone from 20 hours a week to going to three times the workload, I just had to make a decision for what is best for my family,” he said.

After taking the reins of a raw Sunshine Coast squad at the start of this season, Mogg has played a pivotal role in the club’s rebuilding year, despite his efforts yielding just a solitary victory from 18 games.

A Sunshine Coast product, Mogg said: “I wanted to give something back this year and I think I’ve certainly achieved that.”

“I’ve turned some local footballers into Q Cup players and our results certainly showed that.

“YOUNG Malcolm (Congoo) has got a contract in Canberra and Maa Ruua is knocking on the door to get a contract.

“I think I’ve done a good job with this group and I’ve got no regrets, but I’ve got to offload something on my plate at the moment.”

The Sea Eagles came close to securing their second triumph of the season when they established an 8-0 lead against the Devils through tries to ball-player Robbie Congoo and Kristian Freed.

But the Devils struck back through four-pointers to centre Joel Bailey and fleet-footed fullback Javarn White, propelling the visitors to a 12-8 half-time lead.

A precise pass from Sea Eagles halfback Nick Swan put Jaz Nahu-Main through early in the second half to help the hosts to a 14-12 advantage.
