(Herald photo by Jim Konkoly) My Gastroparesis began in October 2009. Around that same time, I received an invitation to attend a youth leadership conference. I went to businesses in town and asked for donations so I could attend. The conference was in the spring of 2010 and by that time I had a feeding tube in my nose, and recently had my gallbladder removed. So I was not able to go. But my GP struck again, and instead of going to that conference I ended up in the hospital again. In January 2011, I was finally given the diagnosis of Gastroparesis and was introduced to the gastric pacemaker. The pacemaker shocks my stomach, making it empty since it can’t empty on its own. We planned to get the pacer immediately but insurance wouldn’t approve it, so we were forced to wait. While we waited for the insurance appeal to go through, I continued to lose weight and got to my lowest point of 88 pounds. At that point we had to do something, so a feeding tube was surgically placed into my stomach. While I was getting the feeding tube, my amazing friends and family from all over were writing letters to the insurance company – explaining how much I needed the pacemaker, and letting them know it was just plain wrong to deny me this medical necessity. Soon after getting the feeding tube, the insurance company called my Mom and approved the temporary pacer. After six days in the hospital, I went home for a week, and then had to go back in the hospital for the temporary pacer.

These include Selenium, Vitamin E, and Beta Carotene.

If you’re going to indulge in brain cancer nutrition therapy, it’s important to know and understand that this is not just about changing your lifestyle; it’s about modifying your behavior so that you may optimize your health. It’s important to have a good support system in place.
This could be relatives, friends, neighbors, a community support group, clergy members, and even medical doctors. If you have a good support team in place, succeeding in brain cancer nutrition therapy will likely be both positive and productive for your health – both inside and outside.
